Band-O-Week: Harlem Shakes

Well, it's official that my new summer soundtrack has arrived and it has put an incredible smile on my face, filled me with warm fuzzies and think of the grass under my feet. I'm not sure whereabouts these guys came from, but it's a pretty darn happy place. They incarnate whifs of Vampire Weekend, but much more upbeat and a little bit more playful. They are able to throw in some nice little electronic quips but still maintain a feel-good rock sound that stays with you throughout the album.

Beginning track, "Nothing But Change" introduces you to their style - garage band rockish, horns and synths all nestled in nicely with a hint of ska. Voila! It's a good one. Personal favorites are "Niagra Falls" making me think of summer road trips with a new love, setting up a campfire and eating ham sandwiches out of a cooler in the back. "Sunlight" is a perfect tune for those day-time beach days and "Unhurried Hearts" contains quite possibly my favorite lyrics in the last couple years:

The sun won't rest 'til we both undress, and rugburns bloom on our backs.
Then we forage at the Farmer's Market, and dine on dirty fruit.
The sun won't rest until we all face west, and sirens turn to flutes.

They are quite new in the scene it seems, as they recently played a street festival in Chicago with little bells or whistles. Was sad I missed this and hope they come around soon. When they sing this will be a better year courtesy of "Strictly Game", I really and truly believe them. In the meantime, get the album "Technicolor Health", crack a beer and fire up the grill...it's summertime courtesy of Harlem Shakes.
